SUPPORT SERVICES
Cancer treatments at the Miami Cancer Center at Mercy Hospital are enhanced by a number of support services available.
Psychological Services
Psychological services serve as an intricate part of oncology healthcare. Skilled psychologist help patients and their families harness their internal resources to cope with symptoms and medical procedures in an active and positive manner. Services include psychological assessment, individual and family treatment, consultation with the treatment team and follow-up services post discharge.
Nutritional Services
Nutritional status prior to, during and after cancer therapy is very important to optimize the patient's response to each individualized program. Registered dietitians make sure that all inpatients and outpatients carry a diet compatible with their course of treatment and/or medications. Services include comprehensive nutrition assessments, nutrition plans of care, recommendations and coordination with physicians for nutrition support protocols, as needed by specific patients.
Social Services
Trained social workers are available to help and teach patients and their families how to better cope with the emotional and social concerns of the disease. Facilitating post-hospital care, including home visiting nurses, medical equipment or long-term placement, social services can also provide referrals to community groups, hospices and agencies offering support services.
Pastoral Care
The Pastoral Care department works to provide a holistic approach to healing. Every effort is made to assure that all persons are given the benefit of pastoral assistance through a collaborative effort with the various neighboring churches and synagogues. Chaplains are also available to offer counseling and support to family members.
Support Groups
Inpatient and outpatient support programs that focus on coping with cancer meet on a regular basis. In partnership with the American Cancer Society, Mercy Hospital established its newest program “Look Good…Feel Better”, a program designed to teach female cancer patients beauty techniques to help renew their appearance and self-image during cancer treatment.
