Electrophysiological Study & Catheter Ablation w/3D Mapping

Miami - November 15th, 2007 - Mercy Hospital's Dr. Alberto Interian, medical director of the Arrhythmia Syncope Center, presented an Electrophysiological Study and Catheter Ablation with 3-D Mapping. The webcast was moderated by Dr. Peter V. Garcia, associate director, Mercy Hospital Arrhythmia Syncope Center. This was the first time a procedure of this kind is performed live during a web broadcast and simulcast in English and Spanish.

Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass - A Beating Heart Procedure

Miami - October 4th, 2007 - Mercy Hospital's Romualdo "Peter" J. Segurola, MD, chief cardiopulmonary division, performed an off-pump open-heart surgery with proximal connectors and minimally invasive conduit harvesting during a live surgical webcast. Jose Marquez, MD, cardiologist, joined Dr. Segurola to discuss the patient outcomes associated with off-pump surgery.

The standard has been to perform open-heart surgery on-pump, where the heart is stopped from beating and the patient's body circulation is maintained through the use of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), also known as the heart-lung machine. This is a routine and safe procedure although there is growing concern about associated risks, such as inflammation, stroke and renal disorder.

Small Incision Total Hip Arthroplasty and Arthroscopic Hip Femoroacetabular Impingement resection

Miami - May 3rd, 2007

Small Incision Total Hip Arthroplasty
Due to disease processes or in some rare cases trauma, the weight bearing surfaces of the hip joint become worn away. This causes significant pain and disability sometimes at a very early age. Joint replacement is then required. New technology, new techniques and new types of hip replacements have made this procedure easier to recover from and more accessible to younger patients.

Surgeon: Carlos J. Lavernia, MD, Chief of Orthopaedics and Director of the Orthopaedic Institute at Mercy Hospital.

Arthroscopic Hip Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) resection
Often first inflicting patients in their thirties or forties with early hip pain, the labrum and cartilage may become destroyed as the femur and pelvis bones pinch together. Otherwise known as hip impingement, or FAI, this form of hip pain is increasingly being recognized as a cause of hip osteoarthritis. Arthroscopy of the hip is a mainstream surgical procedure with well-defined indications and expected outcomes, primarily because of recent advances in surgical instrumentation and techniques.

Electromagnetic Computer Guided Total Knee Replacement

Miami - May 25th, 2005 - Mercy Hospital debuted a new technique for total knee replacement (TKR) via electromagnetic computer-assisted surgery during a live web broadcast on Wednesday, May 25th, 2005. Carlos Lavernia, M.D., medical director of the Orthopaedic Institute at Mercy Hospital performed the procedure. Dr Lavernia is the only surgeon in Florida, and one of six in the world, offering patients this next-generation, less invasive surgical option.

Electromagnetic computer-assisted total knee replacement relies on a computer-assisted navigation system that helps the surgeon better visualize the patient’s knee during surgery. Much like a GPS navigation system found in a car, the electromagnetic navigation system collects data points throughout the surgery and translates these into a visual mapping of the surgical area. The constant flow of information from this technology allows the surgeon to make adjustments intra-operatively based on a “picture” of the patient’s unique anatomy, deformities and/or bone loss to optimally place the implant. As a result, patients may experience less invasive surgeries, reduced trauma to the surrounding tissue, faster recovery times and increased longevity of their implants.

The electromagnetic computer-assisted navigation system now employed at Mercy Hospital is one of the most advanced tools available to aid in the placement and sizing of patient implants based on real-time, intra-operative data.

Live Surgery Webcast Features Mini-Incision Surgery for Total Knee Replacement

Miami - October 9, 2003 – Mercy Hospital’s surgical team showcased a new advanced technique for total knee replacement (TKR), during a live webcast of an actual surgery on Tuesday, October 28th, at 5 p.m. Because of its minimally invasive nature this procedure’s recovery time has been reduced to 50% of the recovery associated with a conventional knee replacement procedure. Cutting into the muscle is minimal, and there is less blood loss, pain and fewer complications.
