The webcast was moderated by Dr. Peter V. Garcia, associate director, Mercy Hospital Arrhythmia Syncope Center. This was the first time a procedure of this kind is performed live during a web broadcast and simulcast in English and Spanish.
Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass - A Beating Heart Procedure
Miami - October 4th, 2007 - Mercy Hospital's Romualdo "Peter" J. Segurola, MD, chief cardiopulmonary division, performed an off-pump open-heart surgery with proximal connectors and minimally invasive conduit harvesting during a live surgical webcast. Jose Marquez, MD, cardiologist, joined Dr. Segurola to discuss the patient outcomes associated with off-pump surgery.
The standard has been to perform open-heart surgery on-pump, where the heart is stopped from beating and the patient's body circulation is maintained through the use of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), also known as the heart-lung machine. This is a routine and safe procedure although there is growing concern about associated risks, such as inflammation, stroke and renal disorder.

Miami - May 25th, 2005 - Mercy Hospital debuted a new technique for total knee replacement (TKR) via electromagnetic computer-assisted surgery during a live web broadcast on Wednesday, May 25th, 2005. Carlos Lavernia, M.D., medical director of the Orthopaedic Institute at Mercy Hospital performed the procedure. Dr Lavernia is the only surgeon in Florida, and one of six in the world, offering patients this next-generation, less invasive surgical option.
Electromagnetic computer-assisted total knee replacement relies on a computer-assisted navigation system that helps the surgeon better visualize the patient’s knee during surgery. Much like a GPS navigation system found in a car, the electromagnetic navigation system collects data points throughout the surgery and translates these into a visual mapping of the surgical area. The constant flow of information from this technology allows the surgeon to make adjustments intra-operatively based on a “picture” of the patient’s unique anatomy, deformities and/or bone loss to optimally place the implant.
